Each year, London’s Institute for Quality of Life compiles the Index of the Happiest Cities. These cities become not only benchmarks for urban development but also sources of inspiration for travellers. After all, who wouldn’t want to learn how to live happily?

Over 200 cities from around the world participate in the annual study, evaluated according to 82 criteria across 6 key categories:

  • governance
  • economy
  • ecology
  • mobility
  • civic engagement
  • health (a new category in 2025, covering mental well-being, safety, nutrition, and work-life balance)

Based on this data, 3 levels of ranking are determined: bronze, silver, and gold. Only 31 cities made it into the “gold list”, where quality of life is most balanced and residents are genuinely happy. Interestingly, 2 US cities also made the list: New York (17th place) — recognised as a “centre of sustainable innovation” with new models of transport mobility, and Minneapolis (30th place) — for its ecological balance and abundance of green spaces.

The report also pointed out that there is no single perfect place to live that guarantees happiness for all its inhabitants, but some cities wisely implement urban policies while constantly analysing their effectiveness, and these results were clearly reflected in the final analysis.

Here’s a look at the top 5 happiest cities in the world in 2025:

1. Copenhagen, Denmark

Unsurprisingly, green spaces, outstanding urban architecture, a mindful lifestyle, and a system that prioritizes the human being are at the top of the ranking. Copenhagen stands out for its low crime rate, well-developed infrastructure, accessible public transport and cycling networks, and environmental policies.

2. Zurich, Switzerland

Zurich is renowned for its high standard of living, which is reflected in its quality of life rankings and its appeal to expats from all over the world. Zurich is not just about banks — it's also about the peaceful silence of the Alps. It’s a city where technology meets natural harmony. The low crime rate and overall stability make it one of the safest cities in the world to live in.

3. Singapore

A city-state where innovation, order, and multiculturalism merge into a sustainable and dynamic environment. Third place in the ranking is due to several factors, such as a quality education system, low unemployment rate, social activity among the population, and the presence of leading universities. In addition, Singapore is known for its safety and high quality of life.

4. Aarhus, Denmark

It is smaller than Copenhagen but no less heartfelt. Aarhus is a city of universities, culture, and green initiatives, perfectly suited for a measured lifestyle. Thanks to its cheerful atmosphere, it even earned the nickname “City of Smiles.” It is Denmark’s second-largest city. Museums, live music venues, and restaurants and cafés are among tourists’ favourite places. The city places a strong emphasis on greening, nature protection, and new ecological solutions.

5. Antwerp, Belgium

One of Belgium’s largest cities and the second-largest port in Europe. A mix of historical depth and modern creative spirit. A city of art, fashion, and exquisite gastronomy — seemingly made for those who appreciate beauty in the details. Antwerp is also distinguished by its historic architecture and holds the status of a global centre for diamond cutting and trade.
